2016 was undeniably the year of the choker. 90’s craze made a riveting comeback and how! With that came the quintessential accessory – the looped choker.
We can only describe the choker pandemic that occurred last year as a serious case of nostalgia and a super stylish trend onset. It’s no wonder that it gradually made its way and transitioned to menswear as well. Men’s chokers are here, and no we aren’t kidding. Breaking gender stereotypes and all sorts of fashion ‘rules’.
Right from the runways and now on the famous e-commerce website Asos, men’s chokers have been creating headlines and how. From dark tones in rich velvet to braided leather, metallics and even paisley – the works!
In June 2016, Louis Vuitton sent male models down the runway in their Spring 2017 show donning men’s chokers.
Similarly so, current Calvin Klein creative director Raf Simons had several choker dressed looks on his male models for his collection in association with the Robert Mappelthorpe foundation.
Elegant, fetishistic and edgy at its best! DSquared2, the famous Canadian brand, not one to be left out, featured chain-linked accents on the runways of Milan Fashion Week – in tribute to the legendary David Bowie, of sorts.
Other brands soon followed course and sent a flurry of male models featuring chokers. The likes of which include bigwigs like Gucci and 3.1 Phillip Lim. Considering this all happened last year, it is safe to say that the trend will soon be creating waves this year. Even online marketplace, Etsy hopped on to the wagon and provides men’s chokers too.
While the Huffington Post simply calls out the new trend by stating that the 90’s fad is “really wearing out”. Most of the internet stays rather confused on the direction of the trend, while some took to twitter to express their appreciation for the style. All said and done, we like to think of it as one step forward.
With Pantone’s Color of the Year 2016 being complimentary tones of Rose Quartz and Serenity – representing the breaking of gender roles and stereotypes, this trend really couldn’t follow up at a better time. Some may hate on it and call it a serious fashion faux pas but hey, was’t style always about breaking the rules?
And while we’re ALL for chokers, men’s chokers and chokers in all shapes and forms, some of them are just pushing it a little far past the tipping point. Case in point, y’all 👇🏻
So what’s the verdict, boys?
Would you dare to try this new trend?
